The Arctic Sunrise enters the Kara Sea

I was working on the Arctic Sunrise a week before she set sail to confront the giant Prirazlomnaya oil rig, where Gazprom intends to become the first company to pump oil from icy Arctic waters. These are some pictures of the crew I worked with and who stayed on the ship to continue peacefully protesting.

We’ve had a fantastic, hot summer this year, cooling down with a drink of water whenever needed.

So when I look at Bo Qiu’s photo feature of water shortages in Inner Mongolia it is a strong reminder that easy access to clean water is not a given for everyone.

The last few days have been very emotional for me. I work on the picture desk and dramatic images have been coming in showing the Russian coast guards reacting with force to our peaceful action at Gazprom’s oil platform. Now, the Arctic 30 have been remanded in custody for up to two months.

I am fascinated by chimpanzees, these most human-like mammals that nurse their babies until they are three years old, use simple tools like twigs to poke into ant nests and noisily communicate with the rest of their troop.
